Savonarola (1452 - 1498)

Savonarola

A character sketch of Savonarola

A preacher who spoke against worldliness and the corruption of the church in Florence.

Served as the spiritual leader of the Democratic party that came to power in Florence.

Gradually his opposition grew and he began to slip from his influential position.

Eventually Pope Alexander VI excommunicated him in 1497.

In April of 1498 he was arrested for heresy and tortured.

On May 23, 1498 he was hung and his body was burned.

Even though he was quieter that Hus and Wyclif, he called for reform in the church.

He believed in justification by faith.

Personal Application.

This was another man who demanded reform in the church. Even though he was not as outspoken as Hus and Wyclif, he was just as persistent. He took a stand against the world and stuck to his guns. We as Christians need to take the same stand. It is easy to get sucked into the pressures of the world. This man was not guilty of this.
