John Knox (1514?-1572)

John Knox

A character sketch of John Knox

Knox was a Scottish religious reformer and founder of Scottish Presbyterianism.

A Catholic priest, he had attached himself by 1545 to the reformer George Wishart and soon became a Protestant.

Knox preached in England and after the accession of Mary I (1553) he went into exile in Geneva where he consulted with John Calvin.

Was invited in 1557 by the Scottish Protestant nobles to lead their fight against Mary of Guise.

After the civil war, Knox verbally attached the Roman Catholic Mary Queen of Scots and after her abdication (1567) the acts of 1560 were confirmed and Presbyterianism was established in Scotland.
