Christian Science

A report about Christian Science.

Many individuals “struggle” with some of the complex doctrines found in the Bible. Mary Baker Eddy was no different except that she took her doubts about predestination farther that most would ever dream. Eddy founded a cult which has an estimated 150,000 members in 2300 branch churches.

Approximately 1600 of these branches are located in the United States.

Mary Baker Eddy was born in 1821 in Bow New Hampshire. At the age of 17 she joined the congregational church and was married for the first time 5 years later. Her husband died 7 months after the wedding.

In 1862, Mary was treated for spinal inflammation by Phineas Quimby, who was known as “The Science of Man”. Quimby practiced a theory that said that healing was all in the patients mind. It did not take long for Eddy to adopt this type of thinking.

In 1866, Mary Baker Eddy received healing while reading Matthew 9:2-8. This prompted Eddy to search the scriptures and to begin to write. Her writings were called Science and Health with Key to the Scripture. The first edition came out in 1870 and the final edition in 1883.

In her “scriptures” Eddy wrote what is now the doctrine of this religious cult.

Christian Science Mary Baker Eddy died at the age of 87.

To the followers of Christ Science, Mary Baker Eddy is regarded as a revelatory of God’s word. In fact, some would put Eddy on the same level as Jesus Christ. The followers of Christian Science feel that there is no need for Doctors, medicine or any type of immunization since illness is in the “mind”.

As Christians, we need to remember that this cult has seriously warped the minds of its followers. Use the Holy Spirit to guide in reaching out to these people.

Through Love, the members of this following will see that Jesus Christ is the Savior, not Mary Morse Baker (Glover Patterson) Eddy.
