Books of the Old Testament
The Bible has two major parts: The Books of the Old Testament and the Books of the
New Testament.
The Old Testament was written and preserved by the Jewish community for a millennium or more before the time so Christ. The New Testament was composed by disciples of Christ during the first century A.D. The word Testament, which is better translated "covenant," is taken from the Hebrew and Greek words designating a contract agreement between two parties. In the case of the Bible, then, we have the old contract (Old Testament) between God and His people and the new contract (New Testament) between God and Christians.
The Old Testament is made up of 39 books (24 in the Hebrew Bible). Each book falls into one of three categories: History, Poetry or Prophecy. Here is a look at these categories as well as a look at each book in the Old Testament.
