Book of Isaiah - the Prince of Prophets

Date

- prophesies during the reign of Ahaz and Hezekiah of Judah and at the time of Israel's exile.

- 740-685 B.C.

Situation in Judah

- Israel and Judah are threatened by Assyria.

- Israel is eventually taken and exiled to Assyria.

- Isaiah confronts King Ahaz for making an alliance with Assyria.

- Isaiah advises King Hezekiah on how to deal with the Assyrians; Hezekiah as a good king trust completely in the God.

Message

- Isaiah prophecies on how God will deal with unfaithful Israel (northern tribes) due to their violation of the covenant.

- He then warns the nations and particularly Judah about their sin. There will be a reprieve for Jerusalem is she repents. (She does repent under Hezekiah and God withholds judgment)

- However, Isaiah predicts that in the end Jerusalem will fall to the Babylonians because of their sin, however, in the future God will restore his chosen people.

- Ultimate salvation will be accomplished through a suffering servant, the Messiah.

Audience

- Mostly Judah (the southern Kingdom)but also Israel.
