A look at the Bible Proverbs Title The Hebrew title of the book is "Meshle Shelomoh" or "Parables of Solomon". The English title is derived from the Latin "Liber Proverbiorum" or the Book of Proverbs Authorship The main author of the Proverbs is King Solomon. The Old Testament says (1 Kings 4:32) Solomon spoke 3000 and of these 800 are recorded in the book of Proverbs. Other contributors are Agur, Lemuel and then there are also anonymous proverbs. Date Solomon's proverbs were, of course, written during this time (before 931 B.C.). The entire collection is believed to have been compiled during Hezahiah's reign (Proverbs 25:1) around 700 B.C. Content Overview The Book of Proverbs provides detailed instruction for Godly people in regards to the practical affairs of daily life. It contains wisdom so that one can relate appropriately to God, parents, children, neighbors and government. Solomon uses a combination of poetry, parables, pithy questions and wise maxims to present in striking form both common sense and divine wisdom necessary to handle life's challenges.
