Some facts about the Bible Prophets
Here is the Role and Function of the Bible Prophets. 1. He is a 'Seer': God gives him the ability to see and to discern the spiritual and moral state of the nation and the people.
2. He is a 'Messenger' for God: God gives him the words of encouragement, warning, judgment or hope that he will deliver to the king or to the people.
3. He challenges and warns of sin and calls the king or his people back to 'Covenant Living'. a) These sins often involved idolatry and the abandoning of the worship of Yahweh.b) These sins also included other detestable practices contrary to the covenant such as sexually immoral conduct, occultist practices, injustice in the courts, disloyalty to marriage vows, mistreatment of the poor, etc.
4. He warns of impending judgment in regard to sin if disobedience continues and explains God's mercy and grace if repentance happens.
5. The prophetic books give a message of ultimate hope and restoration for Israel despite her sins because God is a covenant keeping God and He will yet, regardless of current circumstances, fulfill His plan for His chosen people.
6. The majority of the material in the prophetic Old Testament books (85%) deals with the above issues for the people of their day. There is, however, a predictive element in the prophetic writings that prophesies about the future: (IE, The coming Messiah, the Messianic Kingdom, the ultimate Judgment of God, the Restoration of Israel, etc.)
