Bible Accuracy
This response about Bible Accuracy and the Bible being an inaccurate document is a result of false information that have been influenced by sources other than the Bible. Most people receive their knowledge of the Bible through second, third, or even fourth hand sources. Yet, if you would be willing to check out the evidence which is around, many misconceptions would become straightened out.
Isn’t the Bible full of contradictions and errors?
The Bible has been copied and translated so many times. Hasn’t this process led to errors?
How can you be sure that the Bible is the same now as when it was written?
This one misconception which most people have. It is true that the Bible has been translated many times. It may be hard to believe, but even with all these translations, there are few errors. There is Bible Accuracy. Let me prove this to you. There are 24,000 ancient manuscripts of the Bible which have been found. They are in different languages and come from different times in history. Textual critics have used these manuscripts to verify the Bible which we have today. In the 1947, well after the development of our Bible, the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. Among the scrolls found was a complete copy of Isaiah which was dated around 270 BC. When compared to a present day text of Isaiah, the ancient scroll proved to be 99.5% pure. Society has not trouble accepting the writings of Homer or Plato. Yet there are more manuscripts of the Bible found, some only a 25 years after the last original writing, than manuscripts found for these ancient Greek scholars. This is simply a matter of misconceptions.
Didn’t the Catholic Church arbitrarily decide which books should be included in the Bible and which shouldn’t?
The Apocryphal books are a collection of autographs written 200 years after the time of Malachi, the last Old Testament prophet. The Roman Catholic Church gave this collection full canonical status in 1546 during the Counter Reformation. There is however a problem.Jews have never regarded the Apocrypha as canonical by the Jews or the early church. The reason, the Apocrypha has never “measured up.” Jewish writers like Philo and Josephus never quoted from them, and neither did Jesus or any of the New Testament writers. There are even books written in the New Testament period which have not measured up to canonical standards. That is why the Catholic have included books into the Bible that should not be there. These books do not meet the criteria of the canon and have no affect on Bible Accuracy.
Why are there so many different interpretations of the Bible? What makes you think yours is correct?
There are many different interpretations of the Bible. The problem which causes the most disagreements is because of faulty or inconsistent interpretations. If proper hermeneutics is practiced and the passage is put in the proper context, these problems seem to lessen. For many people, the real problem is not so much in interpretation (understanding), as it is in application (moral response).
How can you put your faith in a book which condones genocide and slavery?
That is a good question. Without looking in too much detail, it is possible to see how God used genocide and slavery for a positive purpose. As God ordered the destruction of Canaan, it is easy to forget the giver of life is capable of taking away life as well. It has been proven that Canaan was an immoral nation and needed to be dealt with. This could be compared to removing a cancerous tumor.Slavery was a part of the culture in the Bible. However, slaves were treated with dignity and respect. The reality of Christ is to transform every human relationship, and Christian principle cry out against the abuse of slavery.
Doesn’t the Bible make claims which are scientifically inaccurate?
This is another misconception. The reality is that the Bible Accuracy does support science. Isaiah 40:22 states that the earth is round. Job contains many scientific truths: the earth hangs on nothing (26:7), air has weight (28:25), the stars singing which is a proven scientific fact (38:7), and hydrogen cycle (26:27-29). Even the account of a man being eaten by a fish has been documented twice around the turn of the century. Science and scientific evidence is alive and well in the Bible.
