Prophesies during the reign of Jeroboam II in Israel and Uzziah in Judah. (760-750 B.C.)

Situation in Israel

There is relative peace and prosperity in Israel however the spiritual and moral situation in the nation is detestable.

Message

He preaches and prophesies against idolatry and pagan worship in the land. The prophet also deals with specific sins of injustice, maltreatment and lack of love for each other (particularly the poor). There are also warnings to other peoples and their sins (Tyre, Edom, Moab, Judah, etc.).

Theme

Attacking the social evils of the people as well as their paganized worship, the prophet issues an urgent call to repentance as the only escape from imminent judgment.

Audience

Primarily to Israel but also to Judah and other nations too.
